SDCC 2009 Coverage: Kotobukiya

wolverine

one of my favourite exhibitors is Kotobukiya. they do some really nice mini busts and statues. here’s a close up of Wolverine in his classic yellow and blue costume

Mattel at SDCC 2009, He-Man, Battle Cat and a rant…

Dec 2008 012

Let me start off by saying that I do really enjoy the newest iteration of the He-Man toy line.  Sadly, I do not own a single figure from the series.

I thought attending San Diego Comic-Con 2009 would be my first shot at a figure.  He-Ro was supposed to be readily available to attendees.  I walked up to the Mattel booth on Thursday morning and saw that He-Man and Beast Man were both also available (Skeletor was sold out).

Unfortunately, the Mattel booth was all but closed to anyone who did not attend pre-view night (Wed from 6pm-9pm) and got a ticket during those short hours.   Making the problem worse was the 6 per item limit.  I would see people leaving the booth with so many bags they could not carry them.  Most dropped the bags nearby and used their baby stroller to cart the items away.  Many people brought children so they could amass more items than if they were alone.   Mattel staff had no idea WTF was going on, no one with a red Mattel shirt could answer anyone’s questions about the booth, the queue or tickets.

Hasbro ran things properly (as best as possible for an in-demand company, but not as good as Hallmark did).  Tickets with time slots were handed out in a low traffic area away from the booth.  Low minimums (3-4 per item) were set.  Items were available for purchase.  Waiting in line was reasonable (about an hour).  Booth was well staffed, fast and courteous.

Shame on Mattel for running this so poorly.  I’m sure you made loads of money from the tons you sold to the few who got a chance.  I’ll stick to classic 80’s He-Man.

SDCC 2009 Coverage: Lining Up, Mattel, and Hasbro

Lines

this is a view of the convention center from the hotel room. i zoomed in to show the massive line for getting your entry badge. entrance C was where you actually went into the building to access the badge pickup area. however, the line started by entrance A. not too bad right, from the looks of the image above? it was bad. what ya can’t see here was that the line wrapped around the back of the building, then around the marina! got a nice tour of that and the bay. we were in that line for about two hours. if you don’t like crowds or standing in line, then the San Diego Comic Con is not for you. it’s the biggest convention of its kind, and only happens once a year. so folks from all over converge for the the five day event.

you are constantly wading thru the crowds and standing in this line or that line. lining up for something was the recurring theme the last two days. lining up to get my badge, lining up to get into the exhibit hall, lining up to leave, lining up to cross the street, lining up to buy things, etc. some places forced you to line up for a ticket that’s needed for lining up to by things. and i didn’t line up for everything. there were games to be played, trailers to watch, panels to attend, etc. it’s pretty hard to see/do all the things you would want to if you’re not there for multiple days. so much time was spent standing in line.

line in tunnel

people walk past one another as the lines snake back and forth

Masters of the Universe toys by Mattel

what kinds of things do people line up for? free stuff, opportunities to try new games, buying comic books, etc. and the toys, of course. here are three Masters of the Universe action figures by Mattel, including He-Man, Skeletor, and Beast Man.

Wonder Twins by Mattel

also by Mattel are are teenage alien superheroes,  Zan and Jayna, the Wonder Twins from the DC Universe. this boxed set will be sold in stores, but the SDCC exclusive set comes with their companion, a space monkey named Gleek.

25th Anniversary Soundwave

Hasbro also made their presence known, with exclusives such as this 25th Anniversary Soundwave boxed set. the Transformers Generation 1 Decepticon comes with four of the cassette tape companions, Lazerbeak, Buzzsaw, Ratbat, and Ravage. much to my chagrin, they included the two birds, Lazerbeak and Buzzsaw (3 flyers if you count Ratbat), but left out Rumble and Frenzy. either one of those would have been nice. still, Soundwave is a fan favorite, and certainly one of mine as well.

Cap Am

this black and white Captain America exclusive is a pretty awesome looking figure. and it comes in a cool sketch cover box.

Wolverine Mighty Mugg

another Hasbro exclusive was this Wolverine Mighty Mugg. it’s based on the Wolverine/Logan from the movies. and the Mugg features retractable claws. “SNIKT!”

Optimus Prime Mighty Mugg

this Optimus Prime Mighty Mugg features a metallic paint job. it’s bad@$$, so “roll out” and pick this one up!

Mattel SDCC 2009 Special Sculpting Event Exclusive Details

from Mattycollector.com:

“Mike Berling and Saun Omos from Mattel’s sculpting team will be at our booth creating a live brand new statue sculpt at SDCC. They tell me they are going to take a stab at a stylized He-Man sculpt of their own creation. This will not be a Classic or a 200X figure, but a one-off artistic interpretation of the defender of Eternia, created live at the show right before fan’s eyes!

Then, on Friday we’ll run their new sculpt up to Mattel in El Segundo and use our rapid prototype machines to make a handful of one-off casts to raffle off on Saturday! Ain’t that cool?

So come on down to see just how the Mattel sculpting process works! Raffle tickets will be given out throughout the show.

Sculpting demos will be as follows:
Thurs: 11-1pm, 3-5pm
Fri: 10-11am, 4-6pm”

from Mattycollector.com.

You thought your collection was out of control? Great series.

SDCC “exlusives” rant

One trend I’ve noticed, and maybe it’s due to the global economic recession, is the wide availability of SDCC Exclusives. In the last few years, companies are willing to sell “leftovers” online the minute SDCC ends. I’m ok with that, get rid of excess inventory, get paid. Now I’m seeing pre-sales of the same items online, so you don’t even need to attend SDCC. What’s the point of calling it an SDCC Exclusive?

In any case, I’ll be at SDCC, waiting in line – for “exclusives”.

Mattel reveals details for SDCC 2009 exclusives

from Mattycollector.com:

We answered a lot of questions about SDCC in the note thread from yesterday, but to repeat some of the information here:

All of the items above (except the SDCC versions, such as Gleek, He-Ro with SDCC stamp and chase Buzz with “ANDY on foot) will be on MattyCollector.com on Aug 3 at 12:00 noon eastern time.

SALES

We will have a seperate booth for sales this year with 8 registers and a full staff. We will except Cash, Visa and Mastercard.

We will bring in seperate shipments each day, so if we sell out on Wed or Thursday, we will have more on Friday. We can not guarantee any of the items as we do intend to sell out of all items by Sunday. Any remaining items left from the show will be sold on Mattycollector.com. We will not be selling to any third parties or dealers.

We will have 500 copies of the MOTU Art book on Wed and 500 on Thursday. We can not guarantee we will have these books past Thursday.

Traditionally we have had plenty of every item by Friday and Saturday and the lines are MUCH shorter. While we can not guarantee we will have all items on Friday and Saturday, we can promise lines will be shorter.

If the lines get longer than the roped off area we will pass out “FAST PASS” tickets which will let you come back into line a few hours later. It will not get you to the front, but it will let you go right into line infront of anyone waiting in the wings or hallway. Honestly, we are not 100% sure how this will work as we will be working with SDCC security throughout the show and will be using the FAST PASS tickets to help managage any long lines. More information will be available at the show.
